CVARC club meeting on 5 Jan 2023 featured a presentation by club president Don W7PJ on the Wilderness Protocol, a specific method for monitoring for possible emergencies in the wilderness - or less populated areas - when emergency resources may be needed, but communication is difficult.
The protocol includes listening to the National (Simplex) Calling Frequency for 5-10 minutes at the top of specific 3-hour intervals during the day. The intervals are set to allow conservation of battery power, but more frequent listening when power is not an issue is encouraged.
The basic interval is from on the hour until five minutes after the hour at 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. local time each day, listening on 146.52 MHz.

CVARC is going to add a National Calling Frequency net to the Sunday night nets for the month of January 2023. This net will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday evenings, and the intent will be to check ranges - who can hear who from each location. In future months, we may use the same net to practice message relaying.
